About.

Well the world seems like a much uglier place nowadays. Can’t seem to stop bad things from happening to me and to people around me. Someone told me my life is one big tragedy. I disagree. My life is a comedy. I’m detached already. Everyone’s got to find a way to stop the painflow somehow and I’ve decided subconsciously that I’ll simply ignore it and go to sleep somewhere.

About the trip. My hospital trip was quite amusing. No I didn’t go for circumcision. No I didn’t have a 2nd head transplanted onto me. Hell I didn’t go for liposuction. If I did they did a pretty poor job. Small op to remove some growth on my arm. I’m walking around like a cripple right now. Sigh one whole month of zero physical activity for me. There goes the exercise plan.

About aging. The stay was quite enlightening in some ways. It hit me the second I entered the 6-bed room that I was the only patient below 50. I took a peek into the other rooms and to my horror I was still the only patient below 50. On the day I left I took another look. There were 3 other people who didn’t look like senior citizens. Moral of the story: don’t get old. Seeing as how I’ve already been hospitalised twice in my extremely short life, I don’t think the future looks promising.

About pain. Experienced new levels of pain. Apparently the op was so bad that despite the fact that I was under general anaesthesia, which basically means they knock you out before they reach for the scalpel, I managed to bite lip. Now it’s swollen enough to become an impediment to my eating. The day I was originally supposed to leave, my arm wound started spurting blood. No I’m not joking spurt is the word. Apparently the blood vessel got un-clotted. Right. It was so bad they had to stitch me up right there in the ward. Without anaesthesia for the first few stitches. Not something I’m eager to repeat. The sight of blood spurting out, the monstrous tool in the doctor’s hands, the steel wire and generally the look of horror on the nurse’s face was quite unnerving. Especially since I was lying on the bed completely helpless to do anything. Yes and it was the very last moment before I was to be discharged. The doctor came in with the forms.

About coincidences. Did you know that Harry Wu has a cousin working at CGH? Now you do. No they don’t really look alike.

About misconceptions. No there are pretty few pretty nurses. The chance of actually getting one to tend to you is the same as the chance of me living to forty. Almost negative. But there are more pretty doctors, surprisingly. And if you think a hospital is a nice quiet place where the doctor comes by once a day, you’re wrong. There are plenty of trainee/student doctors who come by and take a look at you. You’re a specimen. Which is perfectly fine =).

About food. Hospital food sucks. Didn’t stop me from eating but hell I hate hospital food. And did I mention I fasted for 24 bloody hours? Sigh. Not even a drink dammit.

About care. Well I really appreciate all the get-well and take-care messages I got =). Thanks a million guys. I nearly died of boredom and it was fun to read the messages and study my Chinese. That’s about all that happened besides eating and sleeping. Mucho thanks to weili who came to visit me =).

About hope. Hope is the ultimate denial of reality. Faith is the ultimate denial of truth and love is the ultimate denial of reason. I was sorely tempted to put that down in my li jie wen da today but decided I didn’t need more trouble. Sheesh of all things they give us a high blown moralistic evangelistic piece spouting faith love and hope as gospel truth. Gosh can’t they give us one about the realities of education and divorce already? As my favourite character ever, Raistlin, once said, “Hope is the carrot placed in front of the donkey to keep him plodding on.” What do we do then?

“Remove the carrot and walk with our eyes open.”
